What is belonging?
A simple enough question to begin with, it seemed at first.
But the layers kept peeling, the instances of interactions between domains kept increasing, leading down a rabbit hole of curiosity around the topic, its links beyond the social, and the necessity to intervene.
Belonging isn't just limited to a need for a social presence, but instead is a major factor of that which constitutes the self-identity of a person. Something that is developed over time, continuously modified by experiences that people go through on a daily basis. Something that has a deep relationship with feelings of loneliness, which in turn plays a major role in the mental health of people.
A loneliness that had been exacerbated with the then ongoing pandemic.
While the main culprit can be easily identified as not being able to be with friends and family, making it hard to maintain social relationships, there is also a significant part played by the spaces people occupy during these hard times - something that could we could aid with.
We can't hope to solve a lack of belonging. It isn't that easy, is it?
We can, however, try to help.
That is our responsibility as fellow people.
That is our responsibility as fellow people.
That help, that nudge, was the intention behind this project. The object presented here at the end is but one of many ways we could aid in this situation, one presented through the medium of furniture within their spaces. It isn't about just this object. It was always about the ideas discussed.
